In a large piece of research commissioned by BRANZ, TUA investigated just how liveable the medium density housing in NZ is.
The Challenge
TUA was engaged by the Building Research Association of NZ (BRANZ), to investigate how liveability was being achieved by medium density housing, as well as understanding how it could be improved.
The Solution
This multi-year project comprised four key phases:
- A literature review of the international and national research on liveability in medium density housing
- A review of the existing policy setting in New Zealand
- Interviews with the regulators of medium density housing outcomes (Councils)
- Surveys with residents who live in medium density housing
The Journey
In designing a multi-phase project, TUA was able to understand both regulatory and non-regulatory barriers to delivering medium density housing in NZ, as well as understand the perspectives of both the public and private sectors - as well as residents themselves. In addition to providing key recommendations as a result of the research, TUA also identified the knowledge gaps relating to liveability research in New Zealand, which helped to identify areas that require more research.
