Commercial advisor to Ngāti Rēhia on its involvement with a developer partner, in an affordable housing project.
The Challenge
Ngāti Rēhia needed support in formalising their relationship with a development partner; including negotiating a right of first refusal, establishing the right housing tenure, legal structuring, typology, funding pathways and overseeing the appointment and management of other professional services.
The Solution
Through a series of workshops, TUA assisted in identifying preferred tenure scenarios and options, and modelled financing arrangements and costs for Ngāti Rēhia to acquire the units as rentals. TUA also engaged with potential funding partners to understand how best to secure funding for delivering affordable housing tenures for whānau, then supporting Ngāti Rēhia in reaching out to whānau who had expressed financial readiness in their home owning journey.
TUA’s work on this project also included providing input and comments on legal contracts with the developer, guiding the advice of the legal advisors.
The Journey
TUA represented Ngāti Rēhia’s housing aspirations in all interactions with the development partner and other service providers. TUA developed multiple housing and property workstreams to align with their strategic objectives, including an “Affordable and Public Housing” workstream. This project's journey also involved developing design principles to help convey the trust’s design aspirations, for all future housing developments within the rohe.
