The Paekākāriki Housing Trust were looking for support in understanding the implications and opportunities of the new National Policy Statement on Urban Development rules in Paekākāriki. The goal was to better understand the suitability and options for alternative housing models.

The Challenge

The Paekākāriki Housing Trust was set up in 2016 by a small group of locals in response to a much-loved whānau being priced out of the community. However, concerns were raised about how that was going to look, and how the existing infrastructure would support the planned intensification of the area.

The Solution

TUA facilitated a discussion with local residents, to better understand what the new government rules meant for the village, as well as the benefits of intensification and what it could look like for Paekākāriki. TUA then brought their findings to the attention of the Kāpiti Coast District Council, in relation to their proposed Community Land Trust.

The Journey

A range of opinions and voices were heard at the November 2022 workshop. Representatives from Ngāti Toa and Ngāti Haumia were also present. The output of the hui has been used to inform future planning, and there is now a wider understand in the community about the potential role that different types of housing can play.
