Urban design advice on behalf of Ngāti Rēhia to the development partner and urban design principles for the trust.
The Challenge
Ngāti Rēhia were looking for urban design advice that could encapsulate and convey their design aspirations for housing in the rohe. They also wanted to ensure that the development’s designs align with Ngāti Rēhia’s cultural values and traditions.
The Solution
TUA workshopped with Ngāti Rēhia to identify the design aspirations and outcomes they want to see take shape in Kerikeri. TUA then looked at best practice urban design examples for Māori, and environmental sustainability inspiration. Overarching principles were then developed, to guide new housing in the region based on Kāinga Matatika, Taiao, Rawa + Ōranga and Mana Toi.
The Journey
Collaborating with the environmental consultant and technical experts, and working in parallel with the cultural and environmental impact assessment process, TUA progressively developed iterations of the design principles.
TUA outlined the strategic setting, and gave an overview of the principles. This included how they could be applied to various aspects of a housing development and projects that have incorporated Māori design aspirations.
Ongoing advice is being provided to the development partner throughout the design, consenting and development process.
