A strategy to build a regenerative economy in Taumarunui.
The Challenge
Ngāti Hāua Iwi Trust (NHIT), who represent mana whenua in the Taumarunui area, had identified that the economy in the district was not facilitating wellbeing for their whānau and the wider hapori.
The Solution
NHIT wanted to create a Community Wealth Building strategy and TUA supported in creating the initial strategy, grounded in the Taumarunui economic context and aligned with iwi values. This provided a valuable tool for NHIT to inform future investment and development decisions, and educate & advocate to key agencies about the potential of Community Wealth Building
The Journey
TUA built on our existing relationship with NHIT to co-develop a vision and direction for Community Wealth Building in Taumarunui, including who would benefit from the approach and how it could address needs in the community.
In collaboration with NHIT, with the leadership of Trustee Brett Anderson, a Ngāti Hāua-specific Community Wealth Building approach was developed, with place-based drivers aligned with iwi tikanga and values.
Alongside the strategy, a short summary document was provided that can be used by the Trust to advocate and promote Community Wealth Building with whānau, partners, and government entities. This strategy approach continues to be developed by Ngāti Hāua.
