Placemaking and design-led planning as tools for resilience.

The Challenge

The University of Auckland was interested in understanding the role of placemaking as a tool for resilience. They wanted to learn from places who took a design led approach to recovery.

The Solution

TUA undertook a piece of research to support the University's two published articles in the following international journals:

  • The Role of Placemaking as a Tool for Resilience: Case studies from post-earthquake Christchurch, New Zealand.
  • The New Zealand experience of a design-led approach to post-earthquake recovery in Christchurch.

The Journey

TUA were able to bring first hand knowledge of the recovery and rebuild of Canterbury, due to TUA's co-director Greer's direct involvement in this work. TUA's previous research in design led planning and place activation through placemaking, also meant TUA was able to co-author the reports with lead researchers and urban planning experts.
